So way back like a million years ago (the late 80s) there was this obscure little 31 issue comic by Marvel about an alien invasion. The aliens were called the Horde and the humans were boned. They had the tech to completely wipe us out in one go but instead the Horde sort of hovered in our atmosphere sucking up our resources and inflicting horrifying acts of depravity as a show of dominance. Otherwise, things went on as usual. You would just hear about the Horde decimating San Francisco or collecting 80 school kids and ripping their heads off. They also liked to abduct people and either drop them in the atmospere so they would burn up on re-entry (the "high dive") or return people with explosive devices implanted inside their bodies with no way of detection then randomly detonate people when they returned to their families. No one was safe and everyone knew that it was only a matter of time before they were all going to die.

Then a scientist developed the Morituri process that could turn a regular person into a superhero. Only about 5% of the Earth's population were genetically compatible. That number drops even more dramatically when they discovered that people between the age of 18 - 21 were the best candidates. However, even in the best circumstances the process was 100% fatal. If they were lucky they would have about a year before their bodies started to reject the process. Their abilities would grow and they would become stronger and more powerful than they ever have before it became too much and they would randomly explode into a chilling display of power and body parts.

Admittedly it was a dark comic but an awesome one that I'm eager to explore with a character of my own. Tori would be starting her process near the end of the first generation and the beginning of the second. However, we can tweak this a bit if by some miracle there is a Morituri muse out there somewhere from a different generation.
