Layla Ober was born to single mother and full time smuggler/scavenger Giada Ober in 2027, while the Pale Wars still raged on. The Obers were known as the people to go to when you needed something not commonly or easily or legally found and Layla grew up learning the family business. She knows a guy who might have that thing you need, all of her connections have been family connections since before she was born.

Considering the year in which Layla was born, this means she started life in the middle of the Pale Wars. This means she grew up knowing violence and destruction. It was a dangerous and difficult time for herself and her mother. Money wasn't that easy to come by at first and what money they had was spent carefully. This was about the time her mother stepped into the family business of smuggling, teaching her daughter everything she knew when Layla was old enough to return.

During this time, Layla and her mother, Giada, were smuggling items across the country when and where they could. It wasn't at all easy. In fact it was incredibly dangerous considering the war. But they managed. It was a living and when the wars died down, they settled in Defiance.

They chase Arkfall. They chase rare and illegal objects. They travel around what remained of the US, working hard and enjoying life as best as they could.

In 2044, Layla loses her mother to hellbugs. A few days later during a Razor Rain event (where pieces of Arks fall through the atmosphere. It's exactly as it sounds), she loses her lower right leg from the knee down. Shortly thereafter, she's fitted with one hell of an advanced prosthetic. The Indogene, the smartest race known to man and Votan alike, are medical and scientific geniuses and Layla's leg was built by one such Indogene known as Dr Ywell. It was paid for by a resident of Defiance and now, Layla works mainly for them out of gratitude.

It is almost fully articulated. It can bend at the ankle and acts as a normal leg, fully controlled by Layla's own nerves and bio-electric impulses. This has enabled her to continue her smuggling business with relative ease. The only parts on it that don't move all that much (because Layla really didn't care) are the toes. They move when she runs, but it's not something she can move on her own. It's also quite obviously a prosthetic. She turned down the offer to cover it in fake skin.

Months were spent in recovery, adapting to her new leg and getting used to it before she could continue working and now, even without her mother, Layla runs the family business. She keeps her connections, keeps the illegal and the rare items flowing and keeps herself busy in Defiance.

This is not an easy life. It is rough. It is violent and Layla is just as tough as the new world around her. It's what she grew up in and knows and it doesn't look to be changing any time soon.

So, this is the game premise. Layla's here and working in the paintball arena. She misses her mother and wouldn't mind seeing her, even though her mother is hellbug food right now.

The basic extent for the others? I have a Stahma Tarr coming to boomtown (I hope) and they love the idea of playing it that Stahma and Layla know each other. Stahma was the one to get Layla the prosthetic leg, mostly because Layla and her Underground connections are useful. They become friends and after therapy and recovery and time taken to adapt to her new leg, she lives at the Tarr residence. The mun and I joked that Layla helped Alak get things for Christie like rare chocolates and then suddenly we loved that idea.

The Irisa thing? They're friends. Not like...screaming squealing best friends forever? But they get along. They both know how to throw knives really well, Irisa significantly better than Layla but she's learning!

For Giada, I'm good with whatever history you come up with for before she gets pregnant and the only thing I'm really super set on is Lili Taylor as the PB. It just fits perfectly.

This is a long-shot. I know. I'm just really hopeful to the point of being super ridiculous.
