Iain's wife died, leaving him with their two young children and a farm/household to tend. He needs more than a little bit of help to keep an eye on everything and everyone, and although he'll be reluctant and scared (which he won't admit to, at least not at first), he needs someone to fill the void the loss of his wife has created. Someone patient, and kind, and not afraid to kick him in the ass when he needs it.
