I had the idea (months ago, on Tumblr, which is where I find myself now, reading through old ideas) that he's her tutor, and they sort of bond over books, and their shared love of reading, and while there are feelings that crop up for the both of them, it's not very proper for a man in his position to court a woman in hers. He's afraid of losing her to one of the tons of suitors her father is throwing at her, but still, they never share what it is that they're feeling, they just continue to live in this limbo of longing, and sexual tension, which slowly gets all the more intense until finally, he can't take it anymore, and he insists on a meeting with her father, where he tells him everything that he feels, that he loves her, that he might not be a rich man, but he'd treat her right, and that he wasn't leaving without her come hell or high water, and maybe it doesn't happen right away, or maybe they run away together, or maybe they actually are able to be together and get married, but obviously there'll be a happy ending in there somewhere, and ... yes.
